1.Fair Idle

The image of Sisyphus, who is condemned with endless cycles of pushing a boulder up to a top of the mountain and watching it rolls back down, is embedded in the mechanical language of the sculpture, Fair Idle. Nothing is achieved in its mechanical movement with the unfruitful effort as it never reaches the point. The sand leaks out between fingers as soon as being grabbed in a constant loop. However, Albert Camus, the author of The myth of Sisyphus, said of the Sisyphean’s endless task, the struggle itself is enough to fill someone’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.

2.The Memory

When I was in Korea about 8 years ago, I had been working for a design company for more than two year. The boss was a good man with a great talent. 6 years after I left the company, all the sudden, I heard the tragic news that he committed suicide. Since he was a kind of person that lots of people admired also was one of the most promising entrepreneurs in his field, everyone who knows him wonder why he did such thing to him and no one figured out the real reason behind it.
If I am allowed to guess what made him do that, I would say that he was a lonely man. As far as I know he had never had his family close to him nor friends. He always put his work before his life. However, at some point, he might had felt that the entire thing he was doing hard was worthless and meaningless. The hard work had never paid him off. Although I permanently lost my chance to have a chat with him again, I really want to tell him that what you achieved and what you were doing were great, and you inspired lots of people.

1. 정당한 공전

작업 Fair Idle에서는 시지푸스의 상(끊임 바위를 산꼭대기로 밀어올리고 그것이 굴러내려가는 걸 지켜봐야하는)을 엿볼수있다. 그 작업의 기계적임 움직임은 어떠한 점에 이루지 닿지못해 어떤것도 성취하지 못한다. 계속 되는 움직임에도 모래는 잡히자마자 손가락 사이로 흘러내리고 만다. 하지만 시지푸스 신화 의 작가 알베르트 까뮈 는 시지푸스의 끝없는 과업의 역경 자체로 어떤이에게는 충분히 가치가 있을것이라 했다. 누군가는 분명 시지푸스의 행복을 생각할거라고.

2.기억

8여년전 한국에 있는 당시 2년정도 한 디자인회사에서 일했다. 회사의 사장은 굉장한 재능을 지닌 좋은 사람이었다. 회사를 떠난지 6년 갑작스러운 그의 사망 소식이 들려왔다. 그가 자살했다는 것이다. 그는 많은 사람에게 존경을 받았었고 촉망받았던 사업가였기에 그를 아는 모두가 그의 자살의 진짜 이유에 대해 의아해 했다.
감히 그의 죽음의 이유를 추측해보자면 외로움이 큰 이유였다고 생각된다. 내가 알기로 그는 주변에 가족과 친구들이 없었다. 그는 그의 일을 최우선으로 여겼던 사람처럼 보였다. 그리고 어느순간 아마도 그가 했던 일들이 의미가 없다고 생각했던것 같다. 그 일들이 그에게 보상이 되지는 못했던 것이다. 그와 대화할수 있는 기회는 이제 영원히 사라졌지만, 그의 행적은 많은 사람에게 영감이 되었다고 말하고 싶다.
